I've been waiting...

to post this picture since a few days after I wrote my last blog post. Blogger/blogspot has been blocked in Kazakhstan for over half of January. I have a lot to say about this but I'm going to keep it to myself for now, plus I have to go and start my English club!

The shrinking Aral Sea

Does anyone read this thing anyways? Looking at the comments it seems like only my mom reads it!

  5. My name is Eric Hatch, I have just been introduced to you (and another person named Elena) through PCKazakhstan. I will be looking through your posts in the near future. I am thoroughly interested in Kazakhstan, and your blog gives me 1st hand info about the nation.

OK, why is Kazakhstan interesting to me? When I was a kid, a missionary came to speak at a church meeting I attended. It was less than a year after the fall of the Berlin Wall. He spoke of his new journey into a new land, one formerly part of the USSR: Kazakhstan. I was enthralled by the discussion of Russians, most of whom had no religion, and Kazakh-speaking people, who were historically Moslem, all living in one place.

Wow! People I never knew existed were over there in the center of Asia. I wanted to go there, and I started learning about them, bit by bit. As a young boy, thinking I needed to save the world, I saw them as potential conquests.

Now, I see that I can't save anyone, Kazakhs probably have a pretty good life, and many would see me as ignorant, if not evil. However, like most individuals and cultures, Kazakhs want friends. They need allies who show respect to them and fill unmet needs.

So what do you think? Thanks for reading my comment! I hope we can communicate soon.

  7. Hey Sipra,

I've been keeping up with your blog. It's too bad about what is happening to the Aral Sea. There is no more riverflow going back into it. Have you seen the pictures with the ships stuck in the middle of the dirt where the Sea used to be?
